What is a Chemical Peel?
Chemical peels are a category of advanced clinical skin rejuvenation treatments that aid in reversing damaged skin due to factors such as aging, sun exposure and acne.
Who are candidates for Chemical Peels?
Clients who have facial blemishes, wrinkles and uneven skin pigmentation are candidates.
What are the types of Chemical Peels?
There are different levels of Chemical Peels ranging in intensity and strength:
Glycolic Acid An AHA derived from sugar cane that treats photoaging to improve hyperpigmantation, smoothes out fine lines skin and improves texture.
Salicylic Acid An BHA naturally in wintergreen leaves, licorice and other plants. Helps to treat and prevent acne, smooth skin and improve texture with anti-inflammatory properties.
Alphahydroxy Acids (AHA) These are the mildest form of Chemical Peels and provide smoother, brighter-looking skin. AHA peels may be used for treating fine lines, areas of dryness and pigmentation problems. AHA can be mixed with bleaching creams to correct pigment problems, and it can be used as a pre-treatment for the TCA peel. The peels’ ingredients originate from glycolic, lactic and fruit acids.
Trichloracetic Acids (TCA) This type is a medium-depth peeling system that may be performed in different variations. Fine surface wrinkles, superficial blemishes and pigmentation problems are commonly treated with this type of Chemical Peel. More than one TCA peel may be needed to achieve desired results.
How many treatments are required?
Receiving a series of chemical exfoliation treatments will provide the best results. On average we recommend 3-5 treatments depending on your skin condition. Alphahydroxy Acids: Various levels of AHA peels can be performed weekly or at longer intervals. Trichloracetic Acids: This peel is more intense and two to three TCA peels are usually performed to achieve desired results.
Are Chemical Peels safe?
Chemical Peels are safe, but each treatment has different side effects. Some AHA peels may cause irritation, flaking and soreness.
Will there be any downtime?
Down time very is minimal with Chemical Peels. One to seven days after your treatment the skin may look and feel dry, tight and may appear slightly red. Some clients may experience mild to moderate peeling of the skin, this is a normal process of the treatment, and there may be some swelling. Your skin care specialist will provide you with guidelines for the appropriate home care products to use and precautions after your treatment. Cosmelan has minimal downtime, and you follow a monthly home care regimen. You will be able to resume normal activities in a week to ten days.
What are the results?
After a treatment, you can expect to see a fresh, smooth, even and healthy tone to your skin. Advanced chemical exfoliation treatments will soften fine lines, clear imperfections, lighten hyperpigmentation, and improve skin’s texture. The Cosmelan Peel will result in dramatic improvements in treating Melasma and will even out skin tone.
Who should avoid Chemical Peels?
Clients with cold sores, sensitive skin, and certain allergies may be at a greater risk for post-treatment complications. A Health Questionnaire will be completed and reviewed before any treatment.
